Peak wind gusts and final rainfall totals. Also another shot at thunderstorms this week. What could this active storm track mean for us this 2012 - 2013 winter!?!

We had a lot of rain and wind move through the area yesterday. Winds gusting as high as 44Mph in the Lafayette, Indiana area. Enough to knock you right off your feet. Here's a look at the peak wind gusts from around the area yesterday below.

41Mph in Indianapolis. 48Mph was the peak wind gust in Monticello. 28Mph was the peak wind gust in the Remington, area up in Jasper county. I can't believe we almost hit that 50 mph mark in Monticello! wow.

 

Rain was the other factor in yesterdays event. We were calling for rainfall around a quarter inch with slightly higher amounts in thunderstorms. You can see how brief and widespread the heavier rain bands were just by looking at the final rainfall totals from around the area below.

Here at JIWB I recorded a final rainfall total of 0.60" inches. Logansport, coming in with 0.37" and Remington, coming in with 0.36" Inches.

 

Here's a quick look at your forecast below.

 

TODAY- We will look for partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies across the area. Expect a high around 61* degrees. Winds light between 5 and 10 mph gusting to 15 mph at times.

 

TONIGHT- We will see Partly cloudy skies with a cool low around 42* degrees, winds light between 5 and 10 mph.

 

TUESDAY- Highs will be in the lower 70s around 72* degrees. Partly cloudy skies across the area. Winds light between 10 and 15 mph. A low Tuesday night around 52* degrees.

 

EXTENDED OUTLOOK- I'm currently watching another developing system over Wednesday evening into early early Thursday! This will be another strong low pressure system with a strong front that will give way to a squall line of showers / t-storms in the area. Take a look at this model below.

This model is looking into 7:pm - 8:pm EDT Wednesday night. You can see the squall line developing. Some models are already showing rainfall between 1" and 1.5" inches. High gusty winds and heavy rainfall will be a threat once again. Right now a few strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out. However I will keep you posted on this developing event as we continue to move closer to Wednesday and Thursday.

 

As I said in my 2012 - 2013 winter forecast. I think this is going to be a very active storm year this winter. As you can see we are starting to see a lot of active weather develop already.

We saw a lot of wind blow through the area earlier this afternoon along with a few hit and miss thunderstorms. A few brief heavy down pours along with the strong winds made driving difficult. the one good thing out of this windy autumn day was the beautiful rainbow right after that first heavy down pour in the greater Lafayette area. A Wind Advisory Is In Effect! Another Shot Of Storms Later This Week

We're still tracking that strong low pressure system across the area. Winds continue to be our main threat. This radar image was taken at 11:24am EDT.

A wind advisory is in effect until 8:pm EDT. A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WINDS OF... 30 MPH...OR GUSTS OVER 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.

TODAY- We will continue to look for scattered rain showers in the area. Rainfall between a tenth and a quarter inch expected. Gusty winds will be the main threat this afternoon. Winds between 10 and 20 mph, gusting between30 and 40 mph at times. Expect a high today around 74* degrees.

TONIGHT- Few light scattered showers otherwise mostly cloudy as that low pressure system continues to push through the area. Breezy winds gusting between 25 and 30 mph. Look for a low tonight around 44* degrees as the cold front nears.

TUESDAY- A few light left over showers possible int he morning hours however we will dry out and become partly cloudy to mostly sunny across the area. Expect a high around 68* degrees and a low Tuesday night around 51* degrees.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK- Wednesday night into Thursday we will have yet another low pressure system move through the area. Right now models are showing a possible squall line developing out ahead of a cold front with this system. It is something we will continue to watch as we head through the week. Another event of high winds and heavy rain could be possible.

Temperatures will try to get back around average with highs in the upper 50s / low 60s for the rest of the week.

Weekend Autumn Storm. Gusty Winds Could Be A Threat

We have a chance at some autumn storms in the forecast for later tonight into Sunday. Not looking for anything severe however some strong winds will be something to watch. What we are tracking is a strong low pressure system out to our west. It is pulling in a lot of mild air from our south. This is why we will be in the 70s as our high tomorrow. On the back side of this low we have that cold front which will allow for some scattered showers / thundershowers to pop up in the area. Take a look at what I'm talking about below.

This image above is out of the national weather service. A look at our current surface chart. You can see the low pressure system I'm talking about right in the middle of this chart.

 

We we move continue through the afternoon our chances of some scattered showers in the area will increase. Here is what things are expected to look like later this evening around 8:pm EDT below.

You can see that warm front makes its way through the state of Indiana keeping us moist and mild. A few scattered hit and miss showers will be possible during this time. Still our real shot at the heavier rainfall will be later on tonight into Sunday.

 

Here's a look at the surface chart at 8:am EDT Sunday.

The cod front nears the area bringing all that rainfall along with it. Right now I'm expecting rainfall Sunday to be around a quarter inch however we can expect rainfall closer to a half inch possibly three quarters of an inch in some areas that actually see thunderstorms. Still the main thing I'm watching with this system is wind.

Take a look at how tightly packed the isobars are in this GFS model above! This is a sure sign of high gusty winds with this system. Even the bufkit data is pointing to winds easily gusting to 38 near 40 mph possible. So get your anemometers out and ready to measure the winds. I'm expected to see how high these winds get across the area.

 

So here's your forecast in greater detail below.

 

Today I expect us to see mostly cloudy skies across the area with a high around 67*  degrees. Slight chance of a few hit and miss showers in the area out ahead of the front. Low tonight around 61* degrees. Winds between 15 and 20 mph picking up during the night time hours gusting between 25 and 28 mph.

 

Sunday we will see scattered rain / thundershowers across the area as that low pressure system moves through the area. Rainfall around a quarter inch. Expect higher amounts in thunderstorms. Winds will be breezy between 15 and 20 mph gusting to 28 and 38 mph. Look for a mild high around 75* degrees and a low that night around 44* degrees.

 

Monday is looking much better with a high around 61* degrees. Maybe a few early morning clouds however skies will clear and become partly cloudy through out the day. Look for a low Monday night around 39* degrees.

Autumn Is Here With Some Real Tricks And Treats!

Hey Bloggers. First off I wanted to tell you that we added a new element to JIWB on the side bar of the page called "Hot Links". This will have all of the coolest sites that we think you might enjoy. We have only added a few to start however we will continue to add to this list as we come across more outstanding sites.

Autumn has really set in. We have already had our first frost across the area. Many days of highs in the 40s and 50s. And crisp air in place with trees changing color all around. Yes Autumn is here!

 

There is so much to do in October I feel like its just passing me by. All the pumpkin spice treats like coffee, and cocoa. Pumpkin bread. Haunted houses for Halloween! Etc. I try to get out and enjoy this time of year as much as possible, the weather has been great for it so far. Temperatures will try to sneak up into the 70s this week as we head into the weekend. Take a look at the week ahead temperatures below.

Our average high for this time of year is around 66* degrees. As you can see we will start off with cool 50s in the area tomorrow however those temperatures spike once we head into Saturday and Sunday. Next week looks like an up and down kind of week temperature - wise.

 

We will feel pretty chilly tomorrow as a cold front pushes through the area. Winds will be between 10 and 15 mph gusting between 18 and 20 mph at times. Breezy and cool. Keep those heavier jackets out and handy.

Breezy and cool with partly cloudy skies through out the day. High around 58* degrees and a low that night around 41* degrees. I think we will keep any rain showers away until we head into Saturday night / Sunday. That's when we will see a warm front push through the area once again spiking our temperatures into the 70s with possible showers / thundershowers in the area. You can see what I'm talking about in the prog chart below from the national weather service.

We will watch this as it continues to get closer. Saturday night into Sunday is when we have the best chance of seeing any thunderstorms in the area. Right now I expect wind to be the main event during any thunderstorms to move through. Also rainfall will be around a quarter inch to a half inch in areas. I'll keep you posted.
