A Quick Look Back At Our Flood As Dry Weather Is In Our Forecast

Well, it seems everybody love the weather we seen yesterday! Good weather all around the Midwest that is! And I even got a chance yesterday to get out and talk with some of our long lost neighbors! Yes, we all have been stuck in the house waiting for this cold weather to pass.....Well, I think we can say the warm is back for at least a little while that is! Today we are looking for highs in the low 50s and Partly cloudy skies with a few more clouds moving in tonight. But we should see another GREAT day! The whole Midwest has seen good weather the past few days and this is because we have had all this high pressure over our area.

This map above shows how clear we have been as you see the big mess of clouds and or that is Rain down around in the Mississippi, areas. Yes they now have the Flood watches out around Mississippi, as they could see rainfall around 2" to 4" Inches. We all here in Indiana know what that's like! However the GREAT news is I'M not seeing any rain in the forecast until closer to Wednesday as currently some of the models are showing a chance for some rain possible. As you already know I will watch this and keep you posted as well. ;) Also this week is looking good temperature wise as well. I see us slightly above average this week with temperatures in the 50s to mid to upper 60s range! How does that sound? And I do believe that St, Patrick's Day is coming up! So how about a sneak peak at you St, Patrick's Day forecast?Yes, Tuesday is looking rather good at this time with the Partly to Mostly cloudy skies and look at the highs! In the Middle 60s! Yes, I like the looks of this week and I'M sure you do to! And this is even better news for the rivers as well. A dry week is just what we need. Currently the Wabash is at 19.56ft and good news is it is expected to be at around 17.3ft by Sunday 8:am. The Okadale Dam is at around 18.103 kcfs and Flood flow is 13 kcfs. SO with this dry week we will keep seeing the rivers fall and hopefully everybody will be able to start repair and get back to there homes real soon! I did find a few picture of the flooded areas I wanted to show you below. You can just see how bad it really was. No not as bad a past floods but this flood is still up there!This is 225 where it is flooded by the one lane bridge and stair road.

Good news once again we are falling and this is great for all the people who had to leave do to this Major water.....Again I hope they get back home real soon and get things back in order.....It is the weekend so HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYBODY! All Eye's Are Still Watching The Rivers As Snow Is Falling To Our South!

All eyes are still on the rivers today watching them closely! Yes, people did heed the warnings and that is a really GOOD sign! A lot of homes where flooded out with around two feet and more of water and reports are still coming in! However the good news is we will keep falling this week with dry weather in the forecast! Below is where the rivers stand as I type and where we are expected to be Friday around 8:pm.Yes, this is good news. Slowly falling but still falling non the less. The Wabash crested on Thursday 11:00am at 21.85ft. But again the good news is the DRY weather I'M looking at for the next few days! Currently we have a real slight chance for a little light rain on Sunday however two out of three models are showing this staying to our south. Even if we did see any it would be really light. And at this time I think we will stay mostly dry! Otherwise we are looking great rain wise as I'M not looking for our next good chance of rain until closer to next weekend......... I will keep watching this and keep you posted as well.

Now how about the Outlook for today? It is looking a little cool but still NICE! We will see a high pressure system move into our area today bringing us partly Cloudy to mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 40s around 41* degrees. Winds however will be nice and calm between 5 and 10 mph in the morning and as we head into the afternoon winds will slow even more to around 3 and 5 mph. We will be happy with the weather we will see today as just to our south they have been seeing the SNOW!

Here is a look at the Satellite Image and you can see above I have circled just where the snow is falling. That's right KY, was seeing the winter weather advisories and is expecting to see around 2 to 4 Inches of snow when this system pushes out! This just goes to show you how cold we fell these past few days. Cold enough to have snowfall stick in KY. So I think we will be really enjoying our nicer weather today just knowing this could have been us in the snowfall once again! We Look Back At 1981 Flooding In Our Area And The Current Flooding Going On Now!

Hey there your probably thinking what am I looking at? Well, Thanks to Teri, for sending this. It is a few newspaper clippings from the great flooding we seen back in 1981 here in the area as at lease six inches of rain fell overnight. The clipping above is what used to be a parking lot for Mary Lou doughnuts. Yes the flood waters as you can see above did like a waterfall at the south 4th St, site. However that was not the only place that got flooded out bad! Take a look at what once was a flooded out Beck Lane between 19th and 20th streets. Yes, you can see hundreds went into the water it was like a BIG swimming pool. Now normally we would tell people to stay out of the water do to safety reasons like we are with the flooding going on right now! But that did not stop these people here is another below.Kids got to do a little diving in the water. This was also on Beck Lane. And not something you see everyday I might add. Diving off of the car roof tops that is :o) Thanks again Teri for these Great clippings! I don't know a lot of how things where back around 1981 but I will now be doing some more research on this! ;) I do however know that 1981 was one of the wettest years in more areas then Indiana. Here is something I found below.

The summer months were plagued with floods in the North-Central States. Illinois and Indiana were the hardest hit, as rains began in May and continued through July. Flooding was widespread from Wisconsin to Kentucky, with the most severe floods in scattered areas. Thirteen counties dispersed over Illinois, Ohio, and western Pennsylvania were declared Federal disaster areas because of flooding in mid-June. Agriculture in Illinois and Indiana suffered substantially from the storms and resulting floods.

Well, the good news is that Back Lane does not look like what we see above! However there is still a lot of flooding going on at this time. And it is very dangerous! A lot of people have already had to move to higher grounds which is good news as that means they are heeding the warnings! Now currently the Wabash is at 21.83ft and is expected to fall slowly but surely! We are expected to be around 20.5ft by Friday morning 2:am.....This is better news as we will keep falling slowly but surely.....

Another thing is the Flash Flood Warning for Carroll, and White, counties has been lifted. However the flood warning is still in effect for our areas. Here is the waning I have posted below..........

There have been so many reports with this mess of flooding. And right now the BEST thing to do if you have been effected by the flooding is to stay to the higher ground if that means a friends house or even a hotel and white it out! As well as not driving or flooded roads because you wont make it! And more flood deaths happen in cars. Even more at night because you can be driving and not even know you are about to head for water. Remember the words (TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN)Now how about the weather we seen last Tuesday? Take a look above at the high gusty wind speeds we seen around the area. We can see the highest winds did stay south of our area where they where closer to the main line of storms with Indianapolis coming in with a 51 mph wind gust! Lafayette was not to far behind with a peak gust to 40 mph. The good news was there was not any real wind damage reported around the area.....Rainfall however was HIGH everywhere!

Take a look at those rainfall amounts. Remington coming in with 2.14" inches followed by Rochester, and Rensselaer, still in that two inch range. Lafayette coming in with an inch and a half. Rainfall was very heavy around the whole area and I was talking with my friend who let me know she had rainfall coming down so hard that it looked like someone had buckets full just dumping them off the roof! And this was seen all over.

Another thing to talk about was a lot of peoples rain gauges was freezing up when going out to check them yesterday morning Mine was as well. This is because we dropped from a high yesterday of around 65* degrees to a low of 28* degrees..... And was a bit of a shocker as we walked out. Well we are going to see a few more cool days along with dry partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies this week before we start to warm a bit by this weekend. Not much but still nice. DRY is looking good! We need it and I don't think we will see to much rain for a little while that is! This will give the rivers some much needed time to fall..........

A Flash Flood Warning Is Out For White And Carroll Counties!

WHITE IN-CARROLL IN-1036 AM EDT WED MAR 11 2009...A FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR A DAM FLOODGATE RELEASE CONTINUES UNTIL845 PM EDT WEDNESDAY EVENING FOR CARROLL AND WHITE COUNTIES...

AT 1035 AM EDT...DAM OPERATOR REPORTED THE FLOODGATES ON THE NORWAY DAM WERE OPENED AND THE DISCHARGE WAS 22390 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND.THIS WAS CAUSING FLASH FLOODING DOWNSTREAM ON THE TIPPECANOE RIVER.

PEOPLE IN LOW LYING AREAS BELOW THE DAM ARE URGED TO MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE ACROSS FLOODED ROADWAYS.

Hey everybody that's right a flash flood warning for Carroll, and White counties at this time. I'M just checking in with the latest watches and warnings in effect at this time. The Flash flood warning had been lifted for Benton, Newton, and Jasper, counties however the flood warning is still in effect here is a quick statement.

The Wabash river is currently at 19.75ft which is almost 9ft above flood stage! We will only see it rise more through Thursday. Which is when we are expected to crest around 22ft. This would be a good 11ft above flood stage!

Another thing I would like to point out real quick is how much rainfall we have seen. Our average rainfall for this month is right around 2.7" inches. Well, Lafayette has already seen 3.97" inches this month this is about an inch and a quarter above our average rainfall for this time of year! Good news is we will be dry the next few days so this will give us time to dry out a bit! I will have some BIG rainfall numbers for you as well as some high wind speeds. Well, other then all this crazy flooding we have today I do have good news and here is some of it! We did call for tornadoes to be at a low risk and after looking through some reports we did not have any tornadoes reported tonight! This is good news and the only reports to come in at this time was for high winds. Some of which was in Indiana in Muncie the wind gust was 68 mph however there was nothing that said anything about damage which is good to hear! here are a few more reports from Indiana last night.
