All the weather models was showing thunderstorms with some being severe however nothing was calling for what we seen so early yesterday evening. And the reason that band popped up so soon is this. We had so much daytime heating it was not even funny. Believe it or not Lafayette hit a high of 93* degrees! This made the atmosphere so unstable so fast that these cells just started popping like wildfire! Though the weather models knew we would be unstable. They did not show us getting as unstable as fast as we did. This is why we never fully trust what the weather models tell us! When forecasting you have got to use a lot of your own mind and your gut..........
Now you all sent in some wonderful pictures!! I cannot say that enough!
We seen that rotation come up on the Base Velocity Maps and we new to have our plan "B" ready! My aunt who is out in Monroe, here in Tippecanoe county took some pictures of the wild rotation. Take a look at these pictures below..... This was just as the rotation started making its way into Monroe,You can see here in this picture above the start of the forming Wall Cloud. As well as in the picture below. Now below is a look at the radar image at 6:10pm. You can see the area outlined. This is the hook echo I was talking about earlier. This is the same cell you see above as it was heading into Clinton, county and Frankfort. As it headed into Frankfort, that is when it really became noticeable and even better formed! More then what it was in Monroe! And here is how things looked in Frankfort, as that cell move into there area. This picture was sent in by one of our Frankfort Bloggers! Thanks for sending this amazing beautiful nature picture!!!Just look at this amazing Wall Cloud!!!! That takes a brave person to be driving along and take a picture like this one! The good news is there where no reports of tornadoes with this major cell! (Thank Goodness) I'M sure everyone is very happy about that fact!! Though there may have not been any tornadoes reported in Indiana, there was some Hail reports as well as high wind gusts! Here are just a few hail and wind reports I have posted for you all below.

And as if these reports are not enough!!!!! We have Doppler showing rainfall amounts in Warren, county around 4" to 5" inches. Rainfall in Clinton, county of 3" to 4" inches and in Tippecanoe county rainfall of 3" near 4" inches possible. Remember this is Doppler indicated..... This is why we are now expected to crest above flood stage on the Wabash!! You can also see in this picture also taken in Monroe, Here in Tippecanoe county the trees blowing with all the heavy rainfall making the roads almost impossible to drive on! And this picture was taken at around 6:pm that evening..........There where many more reports then just what I posted. And many many people lost power. Over 1,569 people lost power alone in just Tippecanoe county. Another one thousand so many people lost power in Clinton, county. A grand total amount of power outages came well over four thousand people!! Amazing!!!!! Just about everyone has power back on again by this time! That just goes to show you how strong those winds really where. We had gusts well over 60 mph at times. The lightning was another thing that many people was totally amazed at..... I know it is hard to do but we all have to remember to stay away from the windows when lightning is as bad as it was last night!! I'M one of those people! lol :) I will try to post some final rainfall totals on here later on this afternoon along with the update as to what we can expect for tonight!
One thing is for sure! You Bloggers are the BEST and we make a great team!! We will all be back here again ready to track more thunderstorms this evening! Some of which could be severe once again like we seen last night!
Thank you all for your reports! I read them all.......... I will check back in later on today with the latest on what we have to look forward to! If you have any weather pictures you can send them to me at storm18mini@aol.com
See you then....................I'M off to rest up before we start again!! You all should do the same You deserve it! ;)
Police, firefighters and emergency management officials were reporting damage after a band of storms rolled through Tippecanoe and surrounding counties this evening.
ReplyDeleteClinton County police reported that they were responding to numerous calls about heavy storm damage after a tornado reportedly touched down in the southern portion of the county.
A sheriff's department dispatcher said police were working to sort out the calls and respond after the 911 center lost power when intense storms moved through.
Among the damage elsewhere: A large tree fell across South Ninth Street just south of Kossuth Street in Lafayette. It was blocking South Ninth Street as of 7 p.m. Police were on the scene.
Other reports of damage included trees and power lines down and scattered power outages in Tippecanoe, Benton and Clinton counties.
A flash flood warning has been issued for tonight for Clinton County and southern Tippecanoe County, the National Weather Service reported around 6:20 p.m.
The weather service warned about swiftly rising water after 1 to 2 inches of rain fell in bands of storms that cut through the counties this evening.

Great job, Justin and bloggers!! I just said, "WOW--WOW..." looking at that wall cloud forming!! Not sure I could have stodd there and snapped those pix--yeah, I could. It is fascinating and hard to tear your eyes away. We had several (I do mean several) cold-air funnels hanging over Kentland one afternoon,. After I called police, which is what you are supposed to do first, I could not move away from my office window!
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone is okay and hopefully that is the last of the severe stuff for awhile!
I ended up with 1.53 inches rain.
