Rain, Mix, Snow, Wind, Polar Air, And Below Zero Wind Chill. Brrrrrrrrrrr. :) Lot's To Talk About Today!!

Well, bloggers everyone is going crazy talking about this developing system that will make it's way into our area today. It will bring a little bit of everything that's for sure. We will see some Rain, Mixture, Snow, and lots of WINDY WEATHER!! there are some blizzard warnings out to our north and west in areas of Iowa, and Minnesota, with Winter Storm Watches as close to home as IL. And what does Indiana have in effect at this time? None other then a High Wind Watch!! Yes, no winter storm watches or blizzard warnings for us this time around. However this wind is going to be something to take note of!

Now the National weather service is thinking we will see Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible. Now currently I agree with the sustained winds between 25 and 35 mph however as for gusts all the way up to 60 mph I have not see any models call for that at this time. I do on the other hand still think that gusts to 40 and 45 mph are very possible and maybe in some open areas near 50 mph at times. This is still a LOT of wind speed and I totally agree with the High Wind Watch the National weather service has put into effect!!

Now as for the rain and snow part of the storm here's what I'm thinking.

I don't see the 540 line dropping to our south before the rain moves into our area. Let me go ahead and point out again that the 540 line is basically the freeze line. Any precipitation to fall to the north of the 540 line usually falls as snow. And any precipitation to fall to the south of the 540 line usually falls as rain. Here's a few maps I put together to help give you an idea as to what this system is expected to do below.

Above is where the 540 line is expected to be around 7:30pm EST tonight. You can see I still look for it to be to our north with rain already moved into our area.

Here is 7:00am EST Wednesday. You can see the 540 line starts to close in on the WLFI viewing area making our rain start to become a mixture of both rain and snow.

Then to finish out the storm I think the 540 line will be moving well to our south by Wednesday around Noon time. This meaning we will see what ever left over precipitation fall in the form of snow. The bad news for snow lovers is by the time we change over to all snow most of the storms energy will be moving away from the WLFI viewing area. As for snow accumulation I look for little to none. If we see any it would be like what we seen yesterday or less. :(

So a winter storm yes, But not an all snow event. Note that we may start out with a little mix when this system first starts out however we will quickly change to all rain shortly after. Then finish with snow on the back side possible. The wind is by far the BIG story with this system. Rainfall for today I look between a tenth inch and a quarter inch possible. Then on Wednesday maybe another quarter to a half inch with locally higher amounts in areas.

And I still have more to go along with this system! That's right I cannot forget about the wind chill effect we will see on Wednesday. Here's a little map below.

Yes, you will need to get out the HEAVY winter coats and FAST! I look for our high on Wednesday to be around 37 degrees with the low falling quickly once that front moves through Wednesday night pulling down all that polar air making our low around 15 degrees. With sustained winds blowing at 25 to 35 mph and gusts to 40 - 45 mph it will make our daytime high feel around 23 degrees give or take. And with winds still between 30 and 35 mph that night it will make our low feel around 0 to -5 degrees possible!!
