Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!

Waking up to a world of white bloggers! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Looks like our snowfall forecast is going to be close to spot on by the time this system is all finished up.
Lafayette is currently sitting at 3.00" inches. Reports out of West Lafayette, of just under 3" inches.
This radar image was taken at 2pm EST. You can see the heaviest of the snow is starting to make it's way to the east of the viewing area. We will have continued snow showers as the day continues. Light mostly however a few moderate bands of snow are still likely. You can see a few darker radar spots as we zoom in on my local radar below.
We may pick up that last inch out of this system however it is such a wet and heavy snow I don't expect us to pick up more than my forecasted 4" inches in the Lafayette, area.

There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the following until 7PM EST.

Snow forecast update...

Latest data is in bloggers. I'm out and about so I can't currently share a map however this is looking like more of an all snow event. Based on the snowfall map in my last post I'm going to up the Lafayette amounts to 2" to 4" inches. North of Monticello and up around Remington areas to 3" to 5" inches. Timing still the same for this system.

First Snowflakes Of The Season On The Way!

Alright bloggers, The first snowflakes of the season are on the way. They're moving in closer and closer as I type. Take a look at the system we're tracking just off to our west in this radar image below.
This image was taken at 6:26pm EST. You can see the rain and snow knocking on our door. We will definitely see snow from this system however the question everyone wants to know is "How much?". Well that depends on where the 540 line is going to set up. AKA The freeze line.

Right now I have models showing us seeing more snow then we would rain. Take a look at this model below.
The yellow line is the 540 line. If it sets up where this model is showing then I believe we could see snowfall between 1" and 3" inches staying a mostly snow event here in the Lafayette, area. However if we do not cool off below that freezing line soon enough then our 1" to 3" inches could easily fall to a less than an inch event. This is tricky. For snow lovers, the good news is two out of three models show more snow than rain.

We will see the rain / snow start after midnight tonight. As the temperatures drop the rain will begin to change over to snow as we continue to head into Saturday morning / mid day. It will be breezy tonight and Saturday with winds between 15 and 20 mph gusting to 25 + mph at times. Expect a low tonight around 27* degrees with a high tomorrow reaching 36* degrees. A low taking a deep drop Saturday night into the teens around 15* degrees!

So how much snow do I think we'll see based on the current model runs? Well I'm trying to be generous with my first snowfall forecast of the year. So lets take a look.
I like 1" to 3" inches north on Monticello, where an all snow event is much more likely. I'm going with .75" to 2" inches around the Lafayette, area. And lower totals the more south you go south of Montgomery county and around the Indianapolis area. Like I said this is subject to change based on that 540 line. However I feel like this is a pretty good start.

Take care bloggers. And enjoy the first snowflakes of the season!

More Rain On The Way

Well, as you can see above we are seeing some light rain across the area this evening. This will be a kind of off and on event as we head into the overnight. This is only the beginning of the rain to come.

Showers and breezy conditions across the area as we head into tomorrow and Wednesday. Take a look at this prog chart below.
This is looking into about 8pm Tuesday evening. A wave of showers move through the area before another line of rain moves in later on Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning ahead of a cold front.

As we look into the morning of Wednesday we can see that cold front approaching along with the final round of rain.
Rain may be heavy at times along with some gusty winds. No storms to be worried about which is great news. Lets go ahead and break down your Tuesday and Wednesday forecast below.
Alright so rain showers will be off and on tonight. Light with a total rainfall between 0.10" and 0.25" possible.

Tuesday, the showers continue. Breezy conditions with winds between 10 and 20 mph gusting to around 30 mph at times. I expect us to pick up rainfall between .50" and .65" possible. Highs around 60* degrees with a low around 56* degrees.

Wednesday, That final round of rain will move into the area in the early morning hours. We could pick up another .50" to .65" of rain in areas. Again it will be breezy with that passing cold front with winds between 15 and 20 mph. Gusting to around 30 mph at times. Expect a high around 61* early and falling through out the day. Low Wednesday night around 37* degrees.

Now how about we look ahead a little?
That's right bloggers after this cold front moves through the area we will see some cooler temperatures set in if only for a little while. I have a couple weather models already showing the chance for our first snowflakes of the season by Friday night into Saturday possible. It wouldn't be anything to write home about so no need to break out the snow shovels just yet. Still I found this exciting of course and what better timing than with winter weather preparedness week!?

That's it for now bloggers. I'll check back again soon.

JIWB winter weather preparedness week post below.

Kicking Off Winter Weather Preparedness Week.

It is winter weather preparedness week here in Indiana bloggers. Time to go over the check list and make sure everyone is ready to go.

With an El-nino winter like the one we're having, forecasters are expecting us to see a more mild winter with warmer temperatures and below average precipitation. Still with that said it doesn't rule out that possibility of cold snowy weather at times. So we need to be ready!

So today the Indiana department of homeland security and the Red Cross demonstrate that the best way to stay safe from winter weather is to have a disaster plan and an emergency preparedness kit ready. Main concerns are loss of heat and power and also lack of supplies.

Here is a message from the National Weather Service on how to be ready. Take a look. I'll be back with more later.

AT HOME OR WORK... HAVE EXTRA FOOD STOCKED THAT REQUIRES NO REFRIGERATION OR COOKING IN CASE OF POWER FAILURE. HAVE AN EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLY IN CASE WATER PIPES FREEZE. HAVE EXTRA BATTERIES AVAILABLE FOR FLASHLIGHTS...RADIOS...SMOKE ALARMS AND CELL PHONES. HAVE EXTRA MEDICINE...FIRST AID...AND ANY SUPPLIES YOU MAY NEED IN CASE YOU ARE UNABLE TO LEAVE HOME FOR A FEW DAYS. HAVE AN ALTERNATE HEATING SOURCE...LIKE A FIREPLACE...WOOD STOVE...SPACE HEATER OR WARM BLANKETS AVAILABLE IN CASE YOUR PRIMARY HEATING SOURCE FAILS. HAVE A PROFESSIONAL CHECK ALL HEATING SOURCES FOR CORRECT OPERATION AND VENTILATION AND FOLLOW ALL MANUFACTURERS OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS. IF YOUR HOME REQUIRES HEATING FUEL OR PROPANE...ENSURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF FUEL IN CASE YOUR SUPPLIER CAN NOT REACH YOU DURING A WINTER STORM. MAKE SURE YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND SMOKE ALARMS ARE WORKING PROPERLY.

ON THE FARM... MOVE YOUR ANIMALS TO SHELTERED AREAS...HAUL EXTRA FEED TO FEEDING AREAS...HAVE WATER AVAILABLE AND KEEP IT FROM FREEZING. MOST ANIMAL DEATHS IN WINTER ARE FROM DEHYDRATION.

IN VEHICLES... ITEMS TO CARRY SHOULD INCLUDE BOTTLED WATER...BLANKETS OR EXTRA CLOTHING. A FIRST AID KIT...A FLASHLIGHT...NON-CLUMPING LITTER SAND OR GRAVEL TO CREATE TRACTION IF YOUR VEHICLE GETS STUCK... A SMALL SHOVEL...BOOSTER CABLES...AND CANDY BARS ARE GOOD KIT ITEMS AS WELL. YOU MAY WISH TO CARRY PAPER PRODUCTS FOR SANITARY PURPOSES...WATER PROOF MATCHES...A METAL CAN AND CANDLE FOR HEAT AND LIGHT.

So what will be the weather story this week? Glad you asked. I'm currently tracking another weather system that will be developing over the next day and a half. As we head into Monday night more rain will move into our area with the main rain event as we head into Tuesday and Wednesday.
Above is a weather model showing that line of rain moving into the area Tuesday night into Wednesday. We will see breezy conditions and heavy rain at times with this system. Rainfall on Tuesday into Wednesday between .75" and 1". Winds between 10 and 20 mph gusting to 30 and 30+ mph at times.

We will see some cooler temperatures as we head into Next weekend and the start of next week, We will really see some colder temperatures as we head closer to Thanksgiving and the weekend after Thanksgiving. We may even see our first snowflakes flying soon!

Take a look at this cold dip in the 540 line as we head into the weekend after Thanksgiving.
So enjoy these 60s while you can everyone. Cold weather will be here before you know it! With that said, I will be back here later on today as Winter Weather Preparedness week is here! So stay tuned for that. Have a great day bloggers. I'll check back again soon.

Rain And Wind Numbers Are In.

Well the rain has pushed off to the east and now the wind and cooler temperatures take over. Take a look at these peak wind gusts so far across the area.
Monticello, and Frankfort, coming in with gusts of 45 mph. Lafayette, not far behind with 40 mph followed by Remington, with a 39 mph gust. We can still change these numbers as the day continues. Lafayette, is currently still seeing winds gusting to 38+ mph at times. These winds will continue into Friday before finally starting to die down as we head into late Friday and the weekend.

Rainfall for the most part stayed right around what we were expecting. Areas to the north did pick up slightly higher amounts. Take a look.
Kentland, coming in with the highest amount at 0.85". Lafayette, around 0.33". Rensselare, with 0.28". and Monticello, around 0.13".

Now that that cold front is through we have been seeing our temperature fall slowly as the day continues. We currently sit at 48* degrees.
Much cooler air is making its way into our area. We will see a low tonight around the freezing mark 32* degrees. Highs tomorrow in the upper 40s with a low Friday night cold around 26* degrees!

That's it for now bloggers. I'll check back again soon.

System update. Severe storms out west. Rain and wind at home.

Rain started around 8pm here in the Lafayette area. Nothing too heavy. Light to moderate rain at times with winds slowly but surly picking up. Good news is the severe weather is doing as expected and staying well off to our west. Take a look at the number of storm reports from the IL and surrounding areas below.
Lots of high wind reports across the area, a few tornado reports along with some large hail. Hopefully everyone is doing alright in these areas. Some of the winds reports in those areas were reaching speeds as high as 70 mph and 80 mph taking out large trees and small buildings!

The rain will continue off and on tonight for us along with the high gusting winds. Currently in Lafayette we are seeing winds out of the SSE at 20 mph with gusts of 30 mph.

Take a look at this surface chart as we head into the overnight. This is looking at around 1:am EST.
Rain still spreading across the area as that cold front approaches.
The first front will pass through during the overnight while the second front will pass through the area later on Thursday afternoon.

This next chart is looking into Thursday around 1:pm EST.
Once that front pushes all the way through the area we will see much cooler temperatures along with breezy conditions. Highs tomorrow reaching into the low 50s with lows in the 30s. Highs on Friday only making it into the low to middle 40s!

System Update. High Winds Still The Main Threat.

You can see the system really starting to take shape as it continues to move closer to the area. This system will be packing high winds of 40 to 45+ mph at times. showers and a few thundershowers are possible. Right now the timing for this system hasn't changed much since my last update. I still expect rainfall later tonight before midnight. Rainfall between .10" and .25" with slightly higher
amounts possible in thundershowers.

There is a slight risk for severe weather area that is very close to home. However I still expect the strong storms to stay well to our west.

Take a look at this EHI chart below. This is where I expect the severe weather to be tonight if any.
Again I cannot totally rule out a few rumbles tonight however nothing to be concerned about. Our main threats will be the gusty winds.

Here is a link to the current Watches and Advisories for our area.

Tracking rain and high winds moving into the area by Wednesday.

Rain is on the way bloggers. Rain and wind! Right now I'm watching a low pressure system out to our west that will be moving our way giving way to very windy conditions across the area as well as some rain / thunderstorms possible.
Above is a look at just one of the surface charts showing this low pressure system to our west. This system will continue to develop over the next 24 to 48 hours. We will look for rain / thunderstorms to start affecting us by tomorrow (Wednesday) night into early Thursday.

Here is another look at this surface chart as we move into Wednesday night.
I expect anything severe to stay well to the west of the state in areas of IL and MO. What we will see will be much less intense.

Take a look at the storm threat map below
Main threats for our area during this event will be high winds. We will see the winds pick up Wednesday night between 15 and 20 mph gusting over 30 mph. Winds will continue to grow stronger as that low pressure moves through the area with tightly pack isobars as we head into Thursday. Thursday winds will be between 20 and 25 mph gusting between 35 and 40 + mph.

Things will be cooler as we head into Friday once that cold front finishes passing through the area. Highs not even reaching 50* degrees and low falling into the upper 20s. Here is a look at your 5 day forecast below.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Mild weather before another rain system moves through the area.

Well bloggers, the mild weather continues this week as I have 60s back in the forecast by as soon as Wednesday afternoon. Our average high for this time of year is right around 58* degrees. Wednesday we could be as much as 5* degrees above average. It's been a real back and forth battle with temperatures this month and it seems that'll continue at least for a little bit longer. After highs in the 60s on Wednesday we will fall once again into the 40s by the start of the weekend. Lows below freezing. It's really hard to get use too.

Take a look at the forecast below.
Tonight is looking like mostly cloudy skies across the area. I cannot totally rule out the chance of a stray light spotty shower in the area however nothing of much concern. Mostly sunny skies and warm on Tuesday with a high around 58* degrees. The real rain comes back into the story by Wednesday evening around 8pm. partly cloudy to start the day with increasing clouds and rain into early Thursday. Rainfall between .15" and .25". Partly cloudy skies Thursday afternoon and mostly clear and cooler by Friday.

You can see the rain showers moving into the area in this model below.
This is looking into 8pm Wednesday night. By 10PM rain will be area wide. Cooler temperatures will follow this system as we head into the weekend. Expect Wednesday and Thursday to be breezy as this system approaches and moves through. Tightly pack isobars on Friday will also keep it cool and breezy. winds between 15 and 20 mph gusting to 25 + mph at times.

Getting the ball rolling.

Been a long time since I've posted on this weather blog. However I'm back and ready to go again. This time things'll be a little different. I'm doing this blog more as a hobby and less as a duty. This time I'm just doing it for fun. Posts will not be everyday or every storm as I do have a job, a wife and lots of fur babies that take priority over this site. Still with that said I did put together a quick 5-day forecast for my first post back. More detailed forecasts will come in the near future. I just wanted to get the ball rolling again. Take a look bloggers and enjoy.
