Get ready for another short indian summer!

Well bloggers we have yet another Indian summer approaching the area by as soon as tomorrow! I'm talking about highs back into the upper 50s and lower 60s as we reach Sunday. It will be a short Indian summer this time around. However I'm done with the warmer air. I'm ready for some snow! haha. Take a look at the highs and lows I'm expecting across the area as we head into Saturday and Sunday.
You can see I'm calling for a high near 60* degrees as we head into Saturday with a low that night only falling to 52* degrees. Very mild for this time of year. I mean, starting the first day of December off with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s??? That's just crazy talk if you ask me. As we look towards Sunday December 2nd we will again see highs around 63* degrees. With a low that night falling to only 52* degrees. Get out and enjoy it while you can warm weather lovers! cause it won't last for long.

As for tonight we will see a mile low of 42* degrees across the area. Partly cloudy to fair skies with winds calm between 10 and 15 mph.
Here's your weather break down below.

TONIGHT- partly cloudy to fair skies across the area with a mild low of 42* degrees. winds light between 10 and 15 mph.

SATURDAY- expect a high around 57* degrees as a ridge of warmer air enters the area. Skies will be partly cloudy across the area through out the day, Increasing clouds as we head into Saturday evening / night. A few light scattered showers are possible after 1:am EST. Low Saturday around 52* degrees. winds may try to pick up through out the day as that passing warm front move in. Winds between 10 and 15 mph gusting between 20 and 25 mph. winds could peak between 30 and 35 mph during the overnight.

SUNDAY- we will see mostly cloudy skies / a few light scattered rain showers during the morning hours. The clouds will soon break up and give way to partly cloudy skies through out the rest of the day. A high Sunday around 63* degrees with a low that night around 52* degrees. winds will be between 20 and 25 mph. Few gusts to 30 mph are possible. Expected rainfall will be between .10" and .25" inches.

I do see the cooler weather returning by next weekend. Much cooler weather after the 10th of December. We will continue to watch this very closely. Have a great day bloggers and enjoy the 60s!

Snow Showers Lead To A Dusting In The Lafayette, IN Area. Paw Prints In The Snow!

Shiloh's paw print in the snow tonight. My good friend Larissa sends in this picture after tonight's snowy event.
We forecast a 10 to 15% chance of snow flurries across the area tonight and that's just what we saw. We had that light band of snow showers move across the area still trying to push to our east as we head into the overnight. Take a look at this radar image taken at 11:16pm EST tonight below.
That system we talked about in my last post coming up from the southeast is what gave way to our wintry system tonight. We have a light dusting of snow on cars and on the grassy areas. Any small puddles of water will freeze tonight so please be cautious while out driving. There could be a few slick spots around town. Take a look at the snow on this car below.
We picked up a good tenth inch of snow in the Lafayette, area this evening. Not much, but enough to grab our attention and remind us that winter is on the way! A reminder that snow is coming. I'm still watching the long range as some models are pointing to a developing system after the 10th of December. Its a ways off yet so don't get your hopes up, however anything is possible.

Here's another picture out of the Lafayette, area below.
I was excited as always watching the snow fall outside the window at work this evening. I'm ready for that big snow! It gets me in the spirit of the holidays for sure.

Its going to be a cold night followed by another cold afternoon tomorrow. I'm forecasting lows tonight around 22* degrees with a high tomorrow only reaching 37* degrees. Because of this I again ask you to take it slow if you're out on the roads tonight and into tomorrow morning. Any water left standing will freeze making things slick and icy.

Take a look at the snow on the back of my truck as I was heading home from work.
Have a great night bloggers and a safe blessed tomorrow!

Snow for Indiana?

Well, we finally have some snow showing up on radar. However its nothing much. A few light scattered show flurries to the northwest of Lafayette, in areas up around Kankakee, and Watseka, IL. This most likely won't reach our area however I do still have some light flurries in the forecast for later tonight.
This radar image was taken at 11:31am EST.

As for tonight, I'm looking for a cold low around 22* degrees. with partly to mostly cloudy skies across the area. As a system move up from our southwest we will have to keep around a 10% to 15% chance of a few scattered light snow flurries in the area. Otherwise we will be calm and mostly cloudy during the overnight. Here's a look at that system moving up below.
Looking ahead a bit, I have some models pointing to a possible developing system later on as we head into the 2nd week of December. Maybe even a snow system!?! This is something I will continue to watch and keep you posted on.

Have a great day.

Snow Details For Indiana. Talking About Climate Prediction And The Farmers Almanac!

It is almost December and we have still yet to see any real snow in the area. Sure we had that trace of snow earlier in the month in the early morning hours, however no real accumulating snowfall. We keep going back and forth between cold temperatures and mild temperatures. Right now we are again stuck in the 30s and 40s however another ridge of warmer air is in the forecast for this weekend. This is the kind of weather that gets people sick, That quick temperature change so often. I'm ready for us to start leveling out temperature - wise. The NAO and AO models are showing us to be in a neutral phase as we head into December 10th before trying to go negative again after the 10th. We will continue to watch this. I'm trying to find snow somewhere in the forecast bloggers! Its just not showing up yet lol. Here's what the farmers almanac is forecasting below.
(Click Picture To Enlarge)

What do you think of this outlook? It is the farmers almanac, so its more of a rough draft of a forecast. However some choose to stick by it! Whats your take? The next 8 to 14 days the climate prediction center has us in above average temperatures. So they seem to think a mild start to December!?! This is another thing we will have to keep a watch on.

We do have another cold front making its way closer to the area. It will push through later on this evening / tonight into Monday. Lows tonight will fall into the middle 20s around 26* degrees.
Make sure to dress very warm if you gotta head outdoors this evening.
Remember how I said I was looking for some snow somewhere in the forecast? Well, I managed to find a few models that pointed to a real slight chance of a few light scattered snow flurries in the area by later Monday morning. Its only a 10% to 20% chance, but hey its something lol.
Most of us won't see anything out of this as its going to be really light. The farther south you go the better chance of seeing snow flurries you have. Still I cannot rule out a few in our area.

Here's a look at your forecast break down.

TONIGHT- we will see partly cloudy skies through out the area as a cold front starts to push through. A low tonight around 26* degrees. Winds light between 5 and 10 mph. Wind chill between 15* and 19* degrees.

MONDAY- we will start off the day cloudy with a real slight chance between 10% and 20% of a few light scattered snow flurries in the early morning hours. Otherwise becoming mostly to partly cloudy across the area. Winds light between 5 and 10 mph. High around 40* degrees with a low that night around 22* degrees. Nightly wind chill between 10* and 15* degrees.

TUESDAY- we will see a high around 37* degrees with partly cloudy to mostly clear skies across the area. Low around 23* degrees.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK- we will be watching for yet another ridge of warmer air to develop and move into the area by this weekend. Highs will be back in the 40s and 50s. Until then we will see highs in the 30s and 40s for the rest of the week with lows in the 20s and 30s.

A foggy start to thanksgiving before skies clear for a beautiful day!

Happy Thanksgiving Bloggers!

We had a very foggy start to the day yesterday. (11/21/2012). Very dense fog across the area. So thick you could almost cut it with a knife. Take a look at this picture I took before heading out to work around 10:15am EST yesterday.
It was much worse once you actually got out on the open road. People however were taking it nice and slow, being very cautious. Well, we have another shot at fog as we continue through the night and into our Thanksgiving morning. We will see dew points tonight around 39* degrees with air temperatures around 41* degrees. When you have a mild night like tonight with dew points and air temperatures this close together out ahead of a cold front, you get dense fog across the area. And that's what we have in store.
We will have a foggy start to our thanksgiving morning. Things will start to clear out as we head into the late morning hours of thanksgiving. Mostly sunny skies across the area with a mild high around 61* degrees. Winds will be between 10 and 15 mph with gusts between 20 and 25 mph. More clouds will start to move into the area later on that evening with a few scattered light showers after 8:pm EST into early early Friday. Expect a low thanksgiving night around 40* degrees and falling as that cold front pushes through the area.

As for Black Friday, we will see much cooler temperates in the area with a high reaching 43* degrees and falling as the day continues. A low Friday night around 23* degrees. Partly cloudy skies through out the day with winds between 10 and 15 mph. Gusts between 20 and 25 mph.

So be safe and have a great holiday :)
God Bless.

Thanksgiving Forecast!

Alright lets get that sneak peak into the Thanksgiving day forecast!
I'm calling for mostly sunny skies across the area becoming partly cloudy later on that evening. We will stay dry through out the day with a mild high around 61* degrees and a low that night around 43* degrees. We will see a few scattered showers move into the area later Thanksgiving night into Black Friday. Also I see some colder air moving into the area by next week.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! Take care and god bless.

Thanksgiving forecast coming soon!

Hey bloggers. Sorry I haven't posted it a few days. It's been a busy week for me. However I will have a look into your thanksgiving day forecast either later today or tomorrow evening at the very latest! So stay tuned and get ready! :) How you all are having a wonderful week!

God Bless.

A calm weather pattern setting up through Thanksgiving.

We have a real calm pattern setting up through Thanksgiving here in the midwest. Right now most of the country is calm. It almost makes forecasting boring lol. Take a look at the national weather service watches and warnings map below.
I haven't seen it this calm in a long long time! Just not a whole lot going on in the US today. Right now I'm looking for us in the midwest to keep it calm over the next week or so into Thanksgiving. Lots of partly cloudy skies across the area with temperatures slightly above average for this time of year. We're usually around 50* degrees for the month of November, however we could see temperatures a good 5 to 7 degrees above average as we head through the week.
You can see that there is not a whole lot going on looking at the radar as well. A few scattered showers in the south around FL, some scattered showers / snow showers to the northwest, and cloudy to partly cloudy skies for the rest of us. Looking at the NAO and AO models this afternoon I do think we will start to see some cooler air move into the area as we head near Thanksgiving. Right now the NAO and AO models point to cooler air just after Thanksgiving as the models start to go negative. I'm amped up for snow after that small taste of it we got over the weekend. So waiting for snow till after Thanksgiving is a killer :)

As for Thanksgiving and what we're currently looking for, take a look below.
Right now this calm weather pattern will continue through Thanksgiving. With highs currently expected to be in the 50s and lows in the upper 30s / low 40s likely. Again this is a longer range forecast so nothing is set in stone. I will continue to make minor changes to this outlook as we continue to move closer to the big day!

Here's a break down of your forecast below.

TONIGHT- we will look for partly cloudy skies across the area. Expect a cold nightly low of 26* degrees. Winds light and calm between 3 and 5 mph.

THURSDAY- we will see mostly sunny skies to partly cloudy skies across the area with a high around 48* degrees. A low Thursday night around 31* degrees. Winds again light only between 3 and 5 mph.

FRIDAY- we will again be looking for partly cloudy skies across the area with a high just slightly above average around 52* degrees. A low Friday night around 30* degrees. Winds light between 3 and 5 mph.

Have a great day! God Bless.

Snow reports! Cold air moving in.

I'm pleased to say that JIWB was on top of this system. Timing, rainfall amounts, snow accumulation, I have all your final totals and weather reports from around the area right here ready for you all. This system took awhile to move into the area last night as expected. However now that it has passed through we will start to see all the colder air plunge into the state.
Above is a look at the local radar image from earlier this morning. You can see that snow / wintry mix making its way through Lafayette, and the near by cities. Along with all that colder air to the west. So just how much rainfall and snowfall did we see? Well most areas picked up between .50" and .75" inches of rain however one rainfall total really sticks out in this chart below.
Yes, Indianapolis, actually picked up a total rainfall of .91" inches. Just under one inch of rain last night. No snow reported in the Indianapolis, area however if you head just a little bit north I have a few snow reports from areas such as Lafayette, and Greencastle. Not a lot of snow however a nice dusting, enough to get you ready for winter! I have a few pictures for you all below.
This picture was taken out of the Wolcott, Indiana area. You can see just a light dusting of snow covered the mailbox.

This next photo was taken out of the Oxford, Indiana area early this morning. A good picture showing the light snow blowing in the wind covering the deck and chairs. This really shows the kind of night it was.
We didn't have enough snow to cover any of the pavement or neighborhood roads last night, as well as the ground is still to warm. However some grassy areas and local fields received a light dusting of snow. I even have some snow reports out of Valparaiso, and Rensselaer.
Now that this system has made its way to our east, we will start watching the much colder air move into the area. We're watching the temperature slowly fall today as the day continues. Just five hours ago we were at a temperature of 42.6* degrees, and have already fallen to a current temperature of 39.2* degrees in the Lafayette, area. I'm expecting a low tonight around 25* degrees. Get the hot cocoa ready and turn the heater on!
We will be looking for highs in the 40s and 50s for the rest of the week, with lows in the middle to upper 20s and 30s. That's it for now weather bloggers. I'll check back with a sneak peak into your thanksgiving day forecast very soon.

Have a great day!

Wind advisory in effect with snow in the forecast.

That's right, we have another wind advisory in effect for the area until 9:pm EST this evening. we will be tracking winds today between 30 and 35 mph gusting between 38 and 40 mph at times. Any loose objects left outside could be blown away. Winds this high could make driving on open roads difficult. Allow extra time and be careful.
This strong cold front just out to our west is what we are tracking today and we will continue tracking it into Monday. Lots of strong winds with this system along with a lot colder air on the back side! We will see some heavy rain showers and maybe even a few snow showers on the back side of this front. Some models are showing some rain trying to change over as that cold air plunges into the state. Take a look at the Bufkit model below.
In my last blog update I posted a Bufkit model showing a few blue bars. However this time snow is looking even more likely! Now don't get ahead of me, I don't see any real snow accumulation out of this event, however flakes will fly! It's looking like rain to start things in the early early morning of Monday, Then turning into a rain snow mix around 6:am trying to change over to all snow after 7:am EST. As for what we could wake up to?
Maybe a few snowy cars in the parking lot / driveway. Not looking like anything big this time around. You may have to dust off the cars or door step but that's just about it. The ground is simply still to warm and it will be really wet after we pick up a possible half inch or more of rainfall prior to the snow showers. Still it's a taste of winter for all the snow and cold weather lovers out there! I'm excited.

Here's your weather break down below.

TONIGHT- we have that wind advisory in effect until 9:pm EST. We will see winds between 25 and 35 mph gusting to 38 - 40 mph at times. Cloudy skies with rain showers moving in later on. A thundershower cannot be ruled out this evening. Main rain event will be after 1:am Monday. Expect a low tonight around 39* degrees.

MONDAY- we will see rain showers in the area early early Monday morning. Rain becoming a mix between 5:am and 6:am trying to become all snow after 7:am EST. Total precipitation between Sunday night and Monday will be between .25" and .75" inches. Little to no snow accumulation expected. Maybe a dusting on cars. Skies will start to clear out as the day continues becoming partly cloudy. High around 42* degrees and falling through out the day. Low Monday night around 25* degrees. Winds between 10 and 15 mph gusting to 20 mph.

TUESDAY- expect partly cloudy skies across the area with a high around 44* degrees. Low Tuesday night around 26* degrees. Winds light between 3 and 5 mph.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes Monday night is looking like the coldest night we've had so far this season! Get the hot cocoa out and warm blankets ready.
This radar image was taken at 12:53pm EST. You can see that line of rain showers we're tracking just to the west of IL. This is what will move through the area later on this evening / tonight. Just look at all that colder air to the west of this cold front. This is the cold air that will plunge into the midwest as we head into the overnight hours.
So main threats tonight and Monday will be, gusty winds, heavy rain, slick rain snow mix in the morning hours, and cold temperatures Monday night. That's it for now bloggers. If you have any weather related pictures be sure to send them or post them to me on the JIWB facebook page. Link is on the side bar of this blog. I'd love to share your weather photos on the blog. Have a great Sunday!
Weekend Warm Up, Before Monday Cool Down. Bufkit Models Showing Blue Bars! Possible Snow In The Forecast?
It is crazy looking on satellite right now as we have scattered snow and rain showers in the west, and high pressure taking over in the east giving way to clear skies across the area. Take a look at how divided it is below.
This high pressure is going to keep us with partly cloudy skies across the area over the next few days however things will change as the cold front from the west barrels down on Indiana soon enough. Snow showers and rain currently in the west where that low pressure is above. A lot colder air is in place.
Look at how much colder it is currently in the west. Temperatures from 33* degrees to 15* degrees right now! 60s and 70s in the east. 45* to 50* degrees in the Midwest. This is the time of year when temperatures change like crazy. As we head closer to Sunday and Monday, that is when we will see the colder air return to the area bringing some rain and even some rain snow mix chances!
This cold front you see above is what will make things messy to start next week. This chart is looking into Sunday. We will see that cold front move closer to the area bringing rain chances as we head into Sunday night and Monday. Rainfall could be between .25" and .75" inches. We will see some gusty winds along with it. I'll have more details on that in just a moment.
As I said above, some models are showing the chance for some snow showers on the back side of this system Monday. Here is a look at the Bufkit model above. You can see the blue bars showing up Monday morning between 8:am and 11:am EST. We won't see any accumulation out of this however it will be nice for any snow lovers to get a peak at the wintry precipitation. Here is your detailed forecast below.
TONIGHT- we will see partly cloudy skies across the area. Winds will be light tonight between 10 and 15 mph. Expect a low around 44* degrees.
SATURDAY- we will see partly cloudy skies across the area with a mild high near 70* degrees. Winds will be slightly breezy between 10 and 15 mph gusting between 25 and 28 mph. A low Saturday night will be around 48* degrees.
SUNDAY- we will start out the day with partly cloudy skies, however clouds will increase as the day continues. We will be tracking that cold front moving in with rain showers out in front. Expect scattered showers to move into the area by Sunday evening into Monday. The main rain event will be around 1:am into later Monday morning. Currently expecting rainfall between .25" and .75" inches. A high around 67* degrees with a low that night around 45* degrees. Winds will be breezy between 15 and 20 mph gusting between 30 and 35 mph.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK- Some rain may change over to some snow showers as we head into later Monday morning. Little to no snow accumulation is expected. We will see the temperatures cool off once again after that cold front moves through the area. We're talking about highs only in the 40s and 50s again starting Monday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before all the cooler weather to start next week, we have this weekend warm up to get through. Highs in the 60s and lows tonight between 44* and 48* degrees across the state.
If anyone gets any pictures of the first snowflakes of the season rather it be this Monday or later in the month, please post them on the JIWB facebook page! http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Justins-Indiana-Weather-Blog/194210110637780 Thanks ahead of time!
Have a great day bloggers. I'll check back soon, also with looks into your thanksgiving forecast.
Indian Summer? 10 to 12 Degrees Above Our Average? Where Is The Cold??
Some warmer days are ahead. As we head into Thursday and this weekend we will see a ridge develop and move into the area giving way to much warmer air over the next few days. I'm talking about 60s back by Saturday, maybe as soon as Friday.
Above is a chart out of the national weather service showing the warmer air moving into the area. You can see we're expecting highs t range anywhere from 50 - 55* degrees on Thursday, 57 - 62* degrees on Friday, and 62 - 67* degrees as we reach Saturday and then into Sunday. Yes a brief warm up in November. Could this be our indian summer already?
I'm not seeing it get back into the 40s and 50s as our high again until after Monday. Our average high temperature for this time of year is supposed to be around 50* degrees. We will be a good 10 to 12 degrees above that this weekend.
As we head into tonight and tomorrow early morning we will see the chances for fog to increase across the area. I'm calling for dew points to be around 30* degrees with an air temperature around 31* degrees. So fog is looking likely.
TONIGHT- expect partly cloudy skies across the area with a low around 31*  degrees. Winds light and calm tonight between 3 and 5 mph. Chance of fog across the area so be careful if out.
THURSDAY- we will see partly cloudy skies through out the day. A high around 54* degrees. winds again will be nice and calm across the area between 3 and 5 mph. We're watching a ridge develop over the area which will be the start of a brief warm up. As we head into Thursday night we will look for a low around 35* degrees.
FRIDAY- we will see partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies across the area with a high around 59 - 60* degrees. A low Friday night around 44* degrees. Winds between 10 and 15 mph with a few gusts between 20 and 25 mph possible.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK- Highs will be a good 10 to 12* degrees above our average for this time of year as we head into the weekend. Sunday into Monday we will watch a line of showers / thundershowers possible develop along a cold front. This will also help bring temperatures down back around normal. 40s and 50s try to return as our high after Monday.
Winter Weather Preparedness Week In Indiana
Its winter weather preparedness week in Indiana. The reason for this week is to get you familiar with all the weather terms, understand the watches, warnings, advisories, etc, To know how to be safe when traveling in any winter weather this year.
Travel tips from the national weather service and the Indiana police.
Before you go on any trips, plan ahead. Check the weather forecast, if you need to make some changes to allow extra time do to weather related issues, then do so. Anything to make a safer trip for you and others. Know what the watches and warnings mean. Always obey the posted road signs! Adjust speed according to weather conditions. Slick snowy, icy, wet, roads are a big threat! Allow enough room between other cars for extra stopping distance. The Indiana Department of Transportation reminds you to allow snow plow operators to do their job. If their salt is hitting your vehicle you are following too close. avoid passing snow plows on two line roads. Better yet, avoid passing them all together.
Meanings of the winter watches, warnings, etc from the national weather service.
Winter weather advisory -- When a significant winter storm or hazardous winter weather is occurring, imminent, and is an inconvenience.
Winter storm watch -- A significant winter weather (i.e., heavy snow, heavy sleet, significant freezing rain, or a combination of events) is expected, but not imminent, for the watch area; provides 12 to 36 hours notice of the possibility of severe winter weather.
Winter storm warning -- A significant winter storm or hazardous winter weather is occurring, imminent, or likely, and is a threat to life and property.
Blizzard warning -- Winds that are at least 35 mph or greater, blowing snow that will frequently reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less for at least three hours, and dangerous wind chills are expected in the warning area.
Wind chill index -- The calculation of temperature that takes into consideration the effects of wind and temperature on the human body. This is not the actual air temperature, but what it feels like to the average person.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for our weather today, we have a quick line of showers that will move through the area. And a brief warm up as we head closer to the weekend. Highs back in the 60s possible! I will have more details on this warm up coming soon. Until then have a great day bloggers.
Fall Back!
That's right bloggers, it is time once again to fall back! Time to turn the clocks back an hour. Did you remember to do this last night? I'm so happy that we're getting an extra hour of sleep again. It couldn't have come at a better time.
Well, Halloween is past, November is here, and Thanksgiving is upon us! It's all going so fast this year. I've already seen people with Christmas decorations out around town. My sister and grandma are part of it already. They went ahead and put up Christmas trees lol. Even though its over a month away, people are starting to get in the mood. But is it going to feel like winter anytime soon? Sure it's been chilly, but not down right cold by any means just yet. Take a look at tonight's forecasted lows.
Cold lows tonight in the low 30s below freezing, to the upper 20s around 29* degrees in areas. Our nights have been cold lately however not our daytime highs. I have been going through the MOS models as well as the NAO and AO models. Right now they're indicating another shot at some upper 50s / low 60s as our high once we head into the second week of November. NAO and AO models showing signs of going neutral to positive once again. Which means higher temperatures. This is something we will keep an eye on as I know we have some cold and snow lovers out there! Take a look at the NAO model for yourself below.
What you're looking at on this chart above is the red lines. Once they go over that horizontal black line, that's when the NAO is in a positive phase. Below is a negative phase, and the middle is a neutral phase.
Here's a look at your detailed forecast for the next few days below.
TONIGHT- we will see partly cloudy skies over the area with a cold low around 29* degrees. Winds will be light and calm between 5 and 10 mph.
MONDAY- highs will be chilly around 49* degrees with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies through out the day. A low Monday night around 29* degrees with light winds between 3 and 5 mph.
TUESDAY- we will see mostly cloudy skies through out the day. A chance of a few light scattered showers in the evening / possible mix later that night. Any precipitation would be around a tenth inch or less. Expect a high around 49* degrees with a low that night around 36* degrees. Winds between 5 and 8 mph.
Have a great Sunday everyone.
